SHIPIBO TREATMENTS: Ancient Healing Through Sacred Songs and Plant Spirits
What Is a Shipibo Treatment? (And How Is It Different From a Dieta?)
Shipibo treatments are sacred, personalized healing sessions led by an experienced healer known as a maestro or maestra from the Shipibo-Konibo tradition of the Peruvian Amazon. These treatments use powerful healing tools: sacred songs called icaros, energetic cleanses with mapacho (jungle tobacco), flower baths, spiritual diagnoses, and plant infusions. They are designed to clear stagnant energies, remove emotional blockages, and restore balance to the energetic, emotional, and physical body.
Each session is unique and deeply intuitive, often performed in ceremonial space. Treatments can be focused on specific issues such as trauma, heartbreak, illness, or spiritual misalignment or offered as general cleansing and recalibration. The healer works with plant spirits to "see" what the body and soul need, singing specific icaros into the crown, heart, or body of the person receiving.
Treatments are ideal before or after a plant medicine ceremony, during retreats, or as part of an integration process. They can be deeply emotional and profoundly grounding.
Dieta vs. Treatment: Two Sacred Paths of Healing
While treatments offer focused healing in short sessions, Amazonian plant dietas are longer commitments that create a deep relationship with one or more master plants.
- Plant Dieta: A dieta involves ingesting the spirit of a specific plant (like Noya Rao, Bobinsana, or Chiric Sanango) and entering a container of silence, fasting, and spiritual discipline often in isolation. This allows the plant to teach, reveal, and transform from the inside out. The dieta lasts from 7 days to several months and continues to work within you long after the closing ceremony.
- Treatment: A treatment is more immediate and accessible. It does not require isolation or dietary restrictions and is usually offered as part of a ceremony or healing week. It serves as a potent reset clearing energies, illuminating patterns, and creating spaciousness for the soul.
Together, treatments and dietas form the foundation of Shipibo healing: the quick pulse of medicine and the deep river of transformation. Each has its place, and often, one leads to the other.
Our Partnership with Inkan Rao Healing Center
At Inkan Rao Healing Center in the Sacred Valley of Peru, we work closely with our brother Justin, a healer who studied with the Lopez Family, a long lineage of plant doctors. Justin brings warmth, precision, and deep integrity to every session. His treatments are infused with the songs of Noya Rao and carry the intention of ancestral healing and spiritual protection.
Inkan Rao offers both short-term retreats and long-form dietas in alignment with Shipibo tradition. For many of our community members, it is the place where they begin or return to the sacred path of the plants.
